Roger Tanner - Senior Pastor
I was born and lived in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania until the age of 13 when my Dad got a job transfer to Cleveland, Ohio. My wife Sandy and I met in high school and were married in 1973 after we graduated from college. I worked for a large manufactuing company and Sandy worked at a department store. We attended church but weren't involved and neither one of us was a believer. In Febraury, 1976 we had our first daughter, Sara.
In March 1977, I was asked by two men I worked with to attend a weekend retreat at our church. It was at that retreat where t heard the gospel for the very first time. I realized I was a lost sinner and had no hope of salvation without knowing Jesus Christ. I responded to the altar call and received Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. It was life changing to say the least. I devoured the Bible - I couldn't get enough of it. And Sandy and I started to attend a Bible Study at our church.
We had our second child, a son Ryan in April, 1979. In June of 1979 we moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico. In Albuquerque, life continued for me as the bread-winner and Sandy as a stay-at-home Mom. We attended church and we looked for a Bible Study to continue where we left off in Ohio, but I lost interest and started to slip away. Soon after our third child, Lisa was born in August, 1981, I backslid into drinking, partying, and staying out late with my softball buddies. On top of that, I was traveling on business each week being gone 3-4 nights at a time and drinking and partying were a businessman's way of life.
Jesus got hold of me one night when I realized I was too drunk to drive home and called out to the Lord not expecting an answer. But, what happened next made me think I was hallucinating. Jesus stood in front my car with His hand out and said, "Roger this is Jesus. I don't want you to do this anymore. C'mon, I'll take you home now." He meant that He'd take me home with Him, not to my house. I remember saying, "But Lord, I can't die. I have a wife and three kids to take of." He told me, "Your wife and children will be better off with you dead than the way you are now. I want you to stop drinking." Even as inebrieted as I was, I realized I wasn't hallucinating. I said, "Ok Lord, I'll stop." Jesus told me the Holy Spirit would get me home. The next thing I knew, I was in my driveway. I have no recollection of how I got there. I know it was only by the grace of God.
That expereince witth the Lord was just what I needed to turn my life around and save my marraige. Sandy was saved by this time and unbeknownst to me, was trying to figure out how to leave me. I told her what happened and she decided to give me another chance. We began to attend a home Bible Study. Eventually, I became the leader of the Bible Study. I taught Sunday School and a Bible Study at the church we were attending. We had our fourth child, Luke in October 1986. We had moved to another church and became inolved in the children's puppet ministry and I even taught occasionally on Sunday evening. Over time, the church started falling away from faithfully teaching the Word of God and was getting into some strange non-Biblical theology.
In 1994, our daugher Sara was involved in the youth group at Calvary of Albuquerque. At her urging, we began to attend Calvary of Albuquerque studying the Word under the leadership of Skip Heitzig. Shortly after, I began teaching Foundations eventually becoming the Ministrry Leader in 2008. In addtion to teaching Foundations, I began teaching a Home Bible Study in 2002. In 2010, the Lord led me to become a Chaplain with IFOC serving under CalvaryABQ Assistant Pastor Les Palmer. God is gracious. He used all the years of teaching Bible Studies, teaching Sunday School, children's minsitry, teaching and leading Foundations and the Chaplain experience to prepare me for my next calling - planting a church in Bosque Farms, New Mexico.
On June 10, 2012, we held the first service of Light of the World Christian Fellowship. We were amazed. We had 60 people show up for the first service - standing room only. The next week, we had 12 That was the beginning and we learned how to be faithful no matter how many people showed up. We are now known as Calvary Chapel Light of the Worlld and we been blessed to see growth from a handful of people to expanding our sanctuary and holding service on Sundays and having a Wednesday evening Bible study, Women's and Men's minstries, Singles and Couples ministries, and Children's ministry as well as missionary outreaches to Mexico and to Afghanistan with other possible outreaches on the horizon including starting local home fellowships. It is amazing watching God work in people's lives.
Sandy and I have lived in Bosque Farms since 1998 and we are blessed to be the parents of four grown married children and 11 grandchildren. Our greatest desire is to continure to serve our Lord and Savior in our church and in our community and sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ with as many people as possible. May God bless you all.
